Nascido em Budapeste, filho de um arquiteto e de uma cantora de ópera, Curtiz construiu uma carreira de sucesso como cineasta na Hungria, Áustria e Alemanha antes de ir para Hollywood a convite de Harry Warner, em 1926. Tornou-se um dos mais prolíficos diretores da Warner, com mais de 100 longas-metragens entre 27 e 53, incluindo Capitão blood (35), que estabelecey o fanfarrão personificado por Errol Flynn, o arquetípico drama Anjos de Cara Suja (38), o histórico Meu Reino por um Amor (39), e patriótica biografia musical A Canção da Vitória (42) e Alma em Suplício (45). Curtiz foi um refinado diretor de estúdio, um artista cujo trabalho entreteve milhões de pessoas e é atualmente respeitado pelos historiadores. Tinha fama de exigente e empregava um vocabulário exótico. David Niven deu o título de "Bring on the Empty Horsesw" ( tragam os cavalos vazios ) ao seu livro de memórias em homenagem a uma orden de Curtiz dada durante a filmagem de A Carga da Brigada Ligeira (36)
