Charles Bronson nasceu na cidade de Ehrenfeld, no estado da Pennsylvania, nos EUA, filho de imigrantes da Lituânia. Após trabalhar como mineiro de carvão e servir na Segunda Guerra Mundial, ele estudou arte na Filadélfia, onde começou sua carreira como ator.
Após inúmeras participações em pequenos filmes, Bronson começou a firmar sua carreira em filmes B, principalmete em papéis de índios, alternando com uma carreira na televisão (ele só começou a usar o nome Charles Bronson a partir de 54). Em 1967 ele se mudou para a Europa onde conquistou o público novamente com papéis de homens duros e mal encarados, em parcerias como com o famoso Alain Delon ou com o diretor Sergio Leone (de "Era uma Vez no Oeste", com Clint Eastwood).
Após atingir o estrelato na Europa, Bronson retornou para a América onde foi lançado ao sucesso com o clássico "Desejo de Matar". O filme também serviu para consolidar de uma vez por todas o ator como o personagem ríspido e violento, que ele continuaria interpretando por muito tempo.
